I once trusted the Vets for Pets brand and its veterinary practice system, and I entrusted my deeply loved cat, Giraffe, to the Worcester practice for treatment. Sadly, during this experience I encountered the veterinary surgeon Selim Kosem, and entrusting Giraffe to his care has become the thing I regret most in my life so far. After taking prescribed medication, Giraffe developed very severe and abnormal reactions. I repeatedly reported his condition to the practice in detail, provided videos, and later brought him back to the practice as an emergency. During the emergency consultation, my husband clearly told Selim Kosem that we strongly suspected this was an adverse reaction to the medication. However, Selim Kosem insisted at the time that he did not believe these symptoms were caused by the medication, but were instead the result of the disease getting worse. This led to a very heated argument between them. The suspected drug reaction that we were most concerned about did not, at that time, receive what we believed to be the attention and treatment it required. What I still find hardest to understand is that the clinical records later clearly contained notes relating to an adverse drug reaction, including the statement: “Severe adverse drug event to be reported.” This was in very strong contrast to what we had been told during the emergency consultation, and it caused me to lose trust in the way the whole situation had been handled and in the accuracy of the clinical records. I have always struggled to understand this. I had no personal conflict whatsoever with this vet. On the contrary, I trusted him very much at the beginning, which is why I placed my most beloved cat child in his hands. That is exactly why everything that happened afterwards became even more difficult for me to accept and was so heartbreaking. While Giraffe was still alive, I requested his complete clinical records because I had already decided to transfer him to another veterinary practice to continue his treatment. However, after receiving the records, I found a number of entries that I could not recognise, that did not match what had actually been communicated, or that appeared clearly inconsistent with one another. At the time, I did not even feel able to confidently give those records to the next veterinary surgeon, even though that had been the entire reason I requested them in the first place. I later made a formal complaint to the Worcester practice, but the response I received still did not resolve the issues that concerned me most. I am now also preparing to refer the whole matter to the Vets for Pets group, and I hope the group will seriously and independently review Selim Kosem’s handling of this case, including the handling of the suspected serious adverse drug reaction, the accuracy of the clinical records, and the way our complaint was subsequently addressed. No matter how good a veterinary surgeon’s academic background and professional qualifications may be, if they cannot maintain sufficient care, honesty and responsibility when faced with an animal’s suffering, repeated serious concerns raised by the owner, and the recording of clinical information, I believe this can cause very serious harm to pet owners and to the veterinary organisation as a whole. Giraffe was never simply a pet to me. He was my family. He was my son. This experience has caused me extremely deep and lasting grief. Even now, I still feel pain every day when I think about him and everything that happened. I hope that both the Vets for Pets practice and the wider group will genuinely review Selim Kosem’s handling of this matter. I would also like to remind other pet owners: while your pet is receiving treatment, please try to keep all WhatsApp messages, emails, videos and other written communications. When you receive your pet’s clinical records, please also check them very carefully.

Supportive and professional experience throughout! My dog ate a hot cross bun on a walk due to the toxicity in raisins I contacted the emergency line who answered immediately and managed to get me an appointment within 10 minutes of the call.
